What do you think your partner started with in diamonds?
I think most players don't get any training in this area, but it *should* matter. My take is this: why play unnecessarily high cards if you *aren't* trying to send a message? Partner's diamond plays look VERY funny...at least to me. And honestly, I was worried that *my* diamond ace would get ruffed...that's why I so violently signalled in hearts at trick 5. "Here's how you get back to me partner." I'm looking at diamond ruff, club ace or two (dummy didn't signal in clubs), heart, possibly another heart if I had to play my ace, diamond ruff. And 2 more spade tricks to come. We save, no problem.
Nope. Partner started with
... ARGH.
Had partner played normally, up the line, I would have
a) NOT signaled in hearts...no need to. And that keeps the suit totally controlled.
b) exited with a club
Note, too, that this isn't like when you hold, say,
and declarer-partner leads
. Playing the
is something I don't like; yeah, I've heard the song and dance about "saving the point" but that's very narrow thinking. BUT...ok, there's something to it. In this case...there's no reason. You're NOT saving points. I suspect that my partner was only considering...ohh, how can I maybe mess with the declarer's head? Yeah, well, doing that is fine...but DON'T do it when you may badly mislead your partner.
