with 6 -7 card run what would be the meld needed
what about a long suit 9 or more ,some power card and just 8 meld, these are the hand that I find hard. I was told I should have saved with that one.
Together between you and your partner, you must have at least 20 meld to play, and you must take at least 20 points during the hand to save. The length of your trump suit doesn't matter in saving except that the longer and stronger your trump suit is, the more tricks and points you can take.

Also, the length of your trump suit doesn't matter, but what matters is how many tricks you think your hand can take. Usually you can take more tricks with a hand that has a longer trump suit.

I don't know if that makes sense to you or not?

With a 9 or more card suit, most of the time you should be able to take 20 points yourself (if you have some side aces), but with only 8 meld, if your partner doesn't help you out by having meld or taking tricks, you can still not save. Those are tough hands to analyze and play for beginners. I don't know if I'm helping, but I will keep answering any questions I can.

Assuming first seat on your right passes...
Now you're in save seat. If you've got very little meld other than the run, you HAVE to bid 50. This is just a save bid; it doesn't say "I've got a pretty good hand with some tricks and some trumps." Say you've got a run, outside marriage, and jacks around. 21 meld; 8 without. Say partner has no run, and only has 8. You can't make the board. You have to make the save bid because there's a fair risk this is the only way you'll make the board.

Now...if you have meld...*show it* rather than bidding the poor suit.

But this is save bidding.

I understand it all except " 8 without"
Mary
A run = 15 meld
outside marriage = 2 meld
jacks around = 4 meld

So that hand would have 15+2+4= 21 meld.

"8 without" means without a run. In that case you would still have

no run, but still a marriage = 2 meld
outside marriage = 2 meld
jacks around = 4 meld

2+2+4 = 8 meld
21 meld if you name the run; 8 if you pass and he names trumps, and doesn't hit one of your marriages. 10 if he hits the marriage, but not the run.

Let's extend this a bit. You're South. West passes; North bids 50; East passes. Your hand, #1:

ACTCKCQCJCADKDKDQDJDTSTSQSQSJSAHAHTHTHKH

You have to bid 51 because of the club run, and for the same reason: this may be the ONLY way you make the board.

Your hand, #2:
ACTCKCQCJCADTDTDJDJDTSKSQSQSQSAHAHKHQHJH

You have the club run...but you really don't much care what trump is, AND you have that double pinochle. Show the 30 meld! I've heard, over and over again..."why? they've both passed?" Give your partner information that may help him make a better decision. It might not be necessary, but say he's got

TCTCJCJCADKDQDQDASTSKSQSJSAHTHTHTHKHQHQH

If you bid 51, he's going to pass. Your bid promises a run, OR a hand with enough in meld and tricks to be worth bypassing a short run in his hand. If you pass, he's got 8 meld in hearts, or 19 in spades. Guess what suit he's gonna name...spades. Combined, in spades, your hands will take 2 diamonds and 4 tricks between clubs and hearts...one of those tricks may disappear. And you've got like *1* trump trick...your partner's ace. That's 7; maybe there will be 1 more for 8, but still, it's dicey. 2.5 points per trick is the average...but you can't stand to be even 1 point shy.

Now, if you bid 53, partner bids 54, and names hearts. OH GOODIE!!! 6 trump tricks (the opponents' trump ace will take 1 trick), 1 club, 1 spade, 2 diamonds. 10 tricks. EASY make.
